Keeping Your Dog Hydrated on Trails
Essential tips for ensuring your dog stays properly hydrated during outdoor adventures.
Water is crucial for your dog's health, especially during physical activity. Dogs can become dehydrated quickly, particularly in warm weather.
Always bring more water than you think you'll need. A good rule of thumb is one liter of water per hour of activity for medium-sized dogs.
Offer water frequently, every 15-20 minutes during active hiking. Don't wait for your dog to show signs of thirst.
Use a collapsible water bowl that's easy to carry. Some dogs prefer drinking from a bowl rather than a bottle.
Watch for signs of dehydration: excessive panting, dry nose, loss of skin elasticity, or lethargy. If you notice these, rest in shade and offer water immediately.
On hot days, plan your hike for early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.
Consider the trail conditions - if there are natural water sources, make sure they're safe before allowing your dog to drink from them.
